I have a notebook with this chip here and cannot get sound to be played through the headphone jack, only speakers work if i set line jack sense and headphone jack sense to disabled. Strange. It works in windows, so it's not broken per se.
You will have to provide some more information, such as:
- Which ThinkPad model
- OSS or ALSA
- Kernel 2.4 or 2.6
- Linux Distribution
- syslog messages when the sound modules are loaded
Also, did you try the ALSA mailing list (assuming your talking about the ALSA drivers).
