My T43 2686-DGU has an X300 (PCI ID 1002:5460) and lshw reports 128MB.

I dont know what lshw is part of (my machines do not have it), but according to tabook your machine has a 64MB X300. Are you sure that '128MB' is the amount of video memory and not something else being reported, and if it is video memory, are you sure lshw is able to detect it properly?
I would suggest checking your Xserver logs

Right, X.org reports 64MB. lshw is a nifty utility found here. I don't know where the 128MB it reports comes from.
