Lenovo Partnumbers

42T0865, 42T0867, 42T0869, 42T0871, 42T0905 : Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (11n enabled)

42T0873, 42T0875, 42T0877, 42T0879, : Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (11n disabled)

(From T61 Hardware maintenance Manual)

NOTE!
Only the IBM Parts will work, any other parts will give an 1802 error on Post because the sub-vendor PCI ID is different, see Problem with unauthorized MiniPCI network card for more details
NOTE!
Part numbers above will not work with ThinkPad models earlier than the 61 (T61, X61) series, even if the ThinkPad supports Mini-PCI Express. A 42T0865 card was tested in a T60, and resulted in an 1802 POST error.

Hardware switch

Some ThinkPads have a hardware switch that must be in the on position for the radio to work, regardless of driver state:

Support

  • Iwl4965
  • Success with ndiswrapper (on dell 640m) [1]

Flaws

  • Iwl4965/iwlagn driver can cause kernel panics in some cases on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and Intrepid 8.10 (and possibly others). See Intrepid release note and Launchpad entry. Some sources say this is fixed in linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic, while others still report kernel panics with the backported module.
  • [iwl4965] Wireless enabled/activity LED does not light under ubuntu hardy (8.04.1). There are reports that this is fixed in intrepid (8.10). Front panel switch ... at front under the keyboard ... does disable both wifi and bluetooth. The bluetooth LED cycles on/off with the switch appropriately. Only 802.11 wifi LED is problematic.
