IBM Option PN (US): There is potential confusion on this issue. I have a card which is Lenovo p/n 40Y7026. This card is apparently made by Anatel, Model AR5BXB6. The chip is absolutely an Atheros AR5212 (AR5002), and not a 5006, as many believe. IBM/Lenovo may have changed the design but kept the same p/n. Needs further research.
Linux WiFi driver
There's no support by Madwifi yet (as of March 01, 2007). This card is tracked by madwifi ticket #1001.
In the meantime,
get the driver from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-66449 and use ndiswrapper
Hardware switch
Some ThinkPads have a hardware switch that must be in the on position for the radio to work, regardless of driver state:
(Note: This may not always be the case. On at least one T60, model 2007-62U with Atheros AR5212, running Ubuntu Edgy with the MadWifi driver, the wireless switch has no effect. Wireless operates with the switch in either position. But there's an experimental patch which adds support of the switch to ibm-acpi.)
