I've had a Thinkpad 385XD sitting in my house for a while. I found it at a friend's house years ago and took it home to play with, and only recently rediscovered it. Thinkpads are some of the most robust and reconfigurable (and old) laptops out there, so they make good playgrounds for Linux.

When I'm finished with the 385XD, I have an X200 Tablet at home that needs some repairs and Debian-flavored Wacom drivers to write about.
