Somewhat. As far as I know, pcie support is still broken with r300, so while in theory the x300 should be supported, it doesn't seem like that's the case at the moment.
== X lockups after a couple of seconds ==

I have an T41p and I tried the r300 driver, using Xorg 6.9.0.dfsg.1-4 and libgl1-mesa-dri version 6.4.1-0.3, both from debian unstable, on a 2.6.15 kernel. It starts nicely, and 3D acceleration seems to be enabled, but the system freezes after a few seconds after X started up. I used the settings as described on this page. Any idea what to look for? --[[User:Nomeata|Nomeata]] 21:03, 21 February 2006 (CET)

I have the same problem on an R52 with debian testing/unstable (Xorg 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6, libgl1-mesa-dri 6.4.1-0.4). Kernel is 2.6.16. The system is still usable over ssh, but trying to terminate the server freezes it completely (not even SysRq works). Server kill (Signal 9) works, but doesn't restore the console. strace over ssh shows me that the Xorg process is still responding to mouse movements (lots of select()s, read()s, gettimeofday()s) but it always tries to

{{cmdresult|ioctl(9, 0x6444, 0)}}

which returns with code -1, errno is EBUSY (Device or resource busy). File descriptor 9 refers to {{path|/dev/dri/card0}}.

This seems to be an endless loop, maybe a race condition in the X server / r300 driver? I couldn't figure out what ioctl 0x6444 is.

Hope this helps somebody more familiar with the X internals solve this problem. Guess I'll post a bug report to X.org, too.
Ahh - thanks for the info. You perhaps compiled the modules for the drivers yourself and did not use the debian packaged fglrx-driver? Thus, it must be an unneeded limitation on the debian packaged driver which limits its installation... Full listing at http://packages.debian.org/unstable/x11/fglrx-driver which lists as required packages:

xserver-xorg (<< 6.8.99)
the X.Org X server
xserver-xorg (>= 6.8.0)

The first limitation (<<6.8.99) is what prevents installation. I'm sure I could force apt to install it, but I may go back to compiling the modules myself, as using fglrx 8.20.8 with kernel 2.6.15 needs a small patch to compile correctly anyway... --[[User:gsmenden|gsmenden]]

Spiney, where exactly do you have your package from? I re-build the 8.20.8-package from debian with the <<6.8.99 dependecy removed, but when I try to run X, I get
[R200Setup] X version mismatch - detected X.org 7.0.0.0, required X.org 6.8.0.0
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
Any hints? --[User:nomeata|nomeata]

I used the ati-installer (the huge download), created a Debian sid package and installed it, but got the same error. The installer seems to fetch the wrong driver version from the archive, so I extracted it with

{{cmd|./ati-driver-installer-8.20.8-i386.run --extract <sometempdir>|}}

and put the necessary files from the created {{path|<sometempdir>/x690}} subdirectory into {{path|/usr}} by hand. All IIRC, it's been some time since. :)

--[[User:Spiney|spiney]] 07:29, 11 Jan 2006 (CET)

Thanks for the pointer. This is how you get proper debian packages out of the ati-installer:
./ati-driver-installer-8.20.8-i386.run --extract fglrx-tmp
cd fglrx-tmp
$editor packages/Debian/ati-packager.sh # in the line "sid|unstable) X_DIR=x680;;", put a x690 for the x680
./fglrx-tmp/packages/Debian/ati-packager.sh --buildpkg sid
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i fglrx-kernel-src_8.20.8-1_i386.deb fglrx-driver_8.20.8-1_i386.deb
Does anyone know how disable the VGA port ''completely'' even when a cable is attached? Fiddling around with the DesktopSetup and ForceMonitor options didn't do the trick for me, and the MonitorLayout option found in some documentation is no longer valid in the current fglrx driver.
Yes the hdaps driver is in the 2.6.14 kernel, but support to park the heads quickly and freeze the disk queue (to prevent the heads from getting un-parked) is not. There is some disagreement into how that should be implemented.

In other words, the hdaps driver for the moment is rather useless, unless you want to use it to play games.

If you have a p4-class celeron based Thinkpad like the R40e you might want to look at [[How to get SpeedStep working on P4-class-Celeron based Thinkpads | this page]]

Since 2.6.10, there is the ondemand governor in the kernel, which replaces any userspace daemon for cpu scaling and works very well.

== BIOS-Bootsplash ==

This Page describes how I replaced the standard IBM BIOS Bootsplash (The one with the Thinkpad- and Pentium M-Logo), without access to Microsoft Windows or a floppy drive. Although I just did this procedure as described, I wrote down the commends as I remembered, so beware.

=== Getting the Files ===
I got the bios upgrade diskette from the IBM site. It was an .exe-file... but
no, no Windows executable, an OS/2 executable (well, it's IBM after all).
And OS/2 executables don't run in wine. So I did an apt-get install dosemu
dosemu-freedos (for non-debian-users: Get dosemu and freedos somewhere
and make it work somehow).

With dosemu, I could run this executable. But this program unfortunately
needs a floppy drive to write to. So I dig into the linux toolbox and
find: The loopback device. A dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/floppy.bin bs=1024
count=1440 creates a file for the floppy, a losetup /dev/loop0 /tmp/floppy.bin
makes it look like a block device, and this block device is what I put
in the dosemu configuration as the floppy disk device. Now I can run
the extractor executable (dosemu something.exe) and it will happily make /tmp/floppy.bin a floppy image.

=== Adding the custom image ===
This floppy image can be mounted (mount -o
loop,umask=000 /tmp/floppy.bin /mnt/tmp), and now I can read the
readme.txt. To replace the logo file, I create a 16bit 640x480 BMP
file, save it as logo.bmp and run logo.bat. Just kidding, you can't just run
batch files in linux, but - after testing the bitmap, which I just
didn't do - that batchfile only runs prepare.exe logo.scr. This program
won't run in dosemu, but in wine: wine prepare.exe logo.scr. Now there should
be a new logo.mod. If so, you are set, unmount /mnt/tmp and go on.

=== Fake a floppy ===
Now I need to put the image on a floppy and boot. Since I don't have a
floppy (and no floppy drive after all), I use a CD-R (a CD-RW, actually, for the
cheap ones, like me) and burn it like that:
cd /tmp; mkisofs -b floppy.bin floppy.bin | cdrecord -dev=<irgendwas> -

=== The exciting part ===
After this worked, I rebooted from the cdrom and the IBM tool
started. After confirming that I checked a few things, I got asked
whether I want to replace the boot splash image. Yes, I do. It will then
flash the BIOS, which will take about a minute. A hint: Since you know that
any problem during this minute might break your thinkpad, if you have
weak nerves, go and do something else instead of watching a
non-changeing screen.

=== Coda ===
Suddenly the laptop turns itself off. Hopefully, it was finished - in my
case it was. When booting, I got my bootsplash picuture (with some ugly
text "To abort booting, press Enter" or something in the lower left
corner). Unfortunately, you don't see it really long, but it's better
than some advertisement, so it was worth it.
----
I added to wikipedia-like templates. To edit them go to Template:ThinkWiki_Preamble and Template:ThinkWiki_News.
Shall we put the other parts of the page in templates, too? If we do so, we could have that nice block design from wikipedia on our mainpage.
----
I think this is too much color. Makes it less readable, takes longer to orientate than the plain list style layout.

Liked it with only the two blocks in the beginning.

If we want to use blocks for everything, please stick to fewer colors. I think the yellow of the first block is not bad, and else i'd suggest light grey, maybe light blue.

However, if we stick to having all in blocks, how about [[User:Wyrfel/mainlayouttest | this color scheme]]?
== Needed: older ThinkPad specs... ==

As you can tell by my userid here, I've got a 600E. There are a whole lot of them out there thanks to the fact it was the current model during the Dot-Com era. We should cover the older ThinkPads and their quirks as well as the later models.

I also had a 365X, which is now living with a friend in the UK.

Yes, the next ThinkPad I'll probably score is a T4x, they are really kewl machines and inspire technolust in this geek. But until then, I love my 600E and I'm looking forward to some upgrades this weekend.

I will make copious notes on the upgrade process, which will include the installation of a 40GB hard drive and using the stock 10GB drive as extra Windows storage space. I have a hard drive bay module so the stock drive can be reused. The vast majority of the HD will be given over to an install of Debian Linux, with a 7GB Windows 2K partition because the University I will be attending a year from now demands it. (Yeah, I know, sucks, doesn't it.)

ThinkPad different,
But i thought about splitting it into single pages and then this order would mean a lot of single pages. So i turned it around, because:

But i thought about splitting it into single pages and then this order would mean a lot of single pages. So i turned it around, because:

Testapplication -> Driver ---link---> TestAppDriverPage -> ThinkpadModel is a hirarchy with a low number of single pages (All models for one TestApp-Driver-combination on one page).

But you are right, it makes more sense from the comparison point of view to put the drivers in the end.

=BIOS Upgrade=

==Updating from within Windows==

When upgrading from a Windows installation, a BIOS upgrade is quite simple if you follow the IBM instructions, as described on the respective BIOS upgrade page on the IBM site.

{|
| '''Models''' || '''Page'''
|-
| R50/p, R51 (1829, 1830, 1831, 1836), T40/p, T41/p, T42/p || [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-50273 BIOS], [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-50279 Embedded Controller Program]
|-
| R51 (2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894, 2895) || [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-55003 BIOS], [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-54996 Embedded Controller Program]
|-
| R50e || [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-55000 BIOS], [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-54996 Embedded Controller Program]
|}

==Updating from Floppy Disk==

For other operating systems there is an option to create a bootable floppy disk. This is described on the [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-50275 IBM site] as well. Note that you still need some Windows, OS/2 or DOS-System to create the floppy disk. For Linux you can use [http://www.dosemu.org/ DOSEMU] for this.

{|
| '''Models''' || '''Page'''
|-
| R50/p, R51 (1829, 1830, 1831, 1836), T40/p, T41/p, T42/p || [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-50275 BIOS], [http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-50277 Embedded Controller Program]
|}

==Updating from CD/DVD Drive==

The whole thing gets more complicated if you neither have Windows nor a floppy drive installed. This is what this page is intended to describe.

One solution is to extract the floppy disk image with Windows, OS/2 or DOS, and use this image as a boot image for a CD/DVD. Thus it should be possible to upgrade the BIOS with the built-in CD/DVD drive.

Be aware that IBM officially does '''not''' support this! The official statement to my support request was:

<nowiki>
I'm afraid we only support the options listed on our web page and no you
can't burn a CD/DVD, however you can try to use an external USB FDD
(floppy) drive. The experts recommend a IBM USB FDD, however they have also
tested it with a Sony USB FDD drive.

In order to make sure the drive is recognised you can boot up the FDD with
a bootable dos diskette for w98
</nowiki>

But it seems to be possible as Mathias Dalheimer describes this [http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/pipermail/linux-thinkpad/1998-January/009743.html here].

To get an overview which models have been tested with this version, here is a list:

===Does work:===
{|
| '''Model''' || '''Tested by'''
|-
| R31 || [http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/pipermail/linux-thinkpad/1998-January/009743.html Mathias Dalheimer]
|}

===Does not work:===
{|
| '''Model''' || '''Tested by'''
|}

Please note that testing this is '''at your own risk'''!!!

Anyone tried this? Please add your experiences here.

Tried some different method? Please add as well.
Nomeatahttps://www.thinkwiki.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:3Dfps&diff=102Talk:3Dfps2004-09-24T22:31:25Z
Nomeata:
