Specific installation notes for the ThinkPad {{600}}, {{600D}}, {{600E}} and {{600X}}.

==General Notes==
===Installation media===
The 600 series ThinkPads have a bootable CDROM drive, therefore the installation can be done by booting from an installation CD created by burning an ISO image. The BIOS should be set up to boot from CD before booting from the harddrive.

===Power Management===
For [[Power Management]] you can choose from APM or ACPI. Support for either system should be compiled in the kernel. According to [[How to make APM work]], APM is the suggested system for the 600E. In fact, the 600E came pre-installed with [[:Category:Windows|Windows]] and APM as power management system. However, the 600E is ACPI ready, as is stated on the IBM support website:

''"The ThinkPad 600E is ACPI ready. ACPI is not installed, but the system hardware supports ACPI. While ACPI shows a great deal of promise for the future, numerous problems affect the operation of ACPI on ThinkPad and other notebook systems. Therefore, the system comes with Windows 98 running in APM mode."''

[[Ibm-acpi]] supports the 600E as of version 0.11. Read [[How to make use of Power Management features]] for more information.

The 600E does not have a Phoenix NoteBIOS, therefore utilities like [[Tphdisk]] and [http://www.procyon.com/~pda/lphdisk/ lphdisk] can not be used to create a hibernation file for the [[Hibernation mode]]. It is suggested to use the DOS utility PS2.EXE.

===Internal modem===
The {{600E}} has a [[MWave_MDSP3780]] modem. The option CONFIG_MWAVE (under PCMCIA character devices) should be compiled in the kernel or as a loadable module.

===Sound===
The sound chip on the {{600E}} is a [[CS4239]]. On this Thinkpad model, the [[CS4610]] driver does not work, but the ISA interface ([http://www.alsa-project.org ALSA] driver: snd-cs4236) works quite well, if you get the chip configured and enabled. There are two ways to do that:
* Disable fast boot in the BIOS setup, and set up resources using the ps2 tool supplied with your thinkpad. These resource settings have to be passed to the module. See for example the WLUG link supplied below. Also, use the ps2 utility to make sure both audio and midi are enabled on your Thinkpad by using {{cmd|ps2 ? audio|>}} and {{cmd|ps2 ? midi|>}}. To enable, use {{cmd|ps2 audio enable|>}} and {{cmd|ps2 midi enable|>}}. It is also best to avoid any hardware detection utilities (e.g. discover and hotplug) to load the CS46xx driver.
* Use the PNPBIOS or ACPI-PnP implementation and a userspace setup script for automatic configuration like [[Script for configuring the CS4239 sound chip in PnP mode|this one]].
I added to wikipedia-like templates. To edit them go to Template:ThinkWiki_Preamble and Template:ThinkWiki_News.
Shall we put the other parts of the page in templates, too? If we do so, we could have that nice block design from wikipedia on our mainpage.
----
I think this is too much color. Makes it less readable, takes longer to orientate than the plain list style layout.

Liked it with only the two blocks in the beginning.

If we want to use blocks for everything, please stick to fewer colors. I think the yellow of the first block is not bad, and else i'd suggest light grey, maybe light blue.

However, if we stick to having all in blocks, how about [[User:Wyrfel/mainlayouttest | this color scheme]]?
== Needed: older ThinkPad specs... ==

As you can tell by my userid here, I've got a 600E. There are a whole lot of them out there thanks to the fact it was the current model during the Dot-Com era. We should cover the older ThinkPads and their quirks as well as the later models.

I also had a 365X, which is now living with a friend in the UK.

Yes, the next ThinkPad I'll probably score is a T4x, they are really kewl machines and inspire technolust in this geek. But until then, I love my 600E and I'm looking forward to some upgrades this weekend.

I will make copious notes on the upgrade process, which will include the installation of a 40GB hard drive and using the stock 10GB drive as extra Windows storage space. I have a hard drive bay module so the stock drive can be reused. The vast majority of the HD will be given over to an install of Debian Linux, with a 7GB Windows 2K partition because the University I will be attending a year from now demands it. (Yeah, I know, sucks, doesn't it.)

ThinkPad different,
Michelle

----
I totally agree.

All specs of all models can be found on the IBM support pages, we just need volunteers to transfer the infos into internal pages.

Since this is not the most interesting thing to do and hence it would be best if people using older ThinkPads transfer the specs for their models themselves. The same goes for other articles as installation infos, problems or whatever. I had a 570 once and loved it even though T30s where available at the same time...and i'd like to see more about these machines here, which everyone of them had some special characteristics and ideas behind them. So please show up, proud owners of Thinkpad 730TEs. 701s, 360Ps, Transnotes etc. ... ! ;)

Owners of the newer machines should take care of writing their articles (especially when creating new pages or sections) in a way that they are open for older models as well...i.e. make clear in the page or section title that its a specific topic for newer models.

Thanks,
i tried to do some stuff with templates, but it seems like templates in this version of MediaWiki are lacking some features and also seem a bit buggy (or i want too much). Is it troublesome to update to 1.4rc1? Shell we wait for the stable?
There is still a problem with URL rewriting, so I had to deactivate the .htaccess file. Because of this, we got this ugly URLS with this '''index.php''' before the entry. The problem seems to be with the wiki config file '''LocalSettings.php''' and/or the '''.htaccess''' file.
I hope I get it fixed soon.
I have a thinkpad R50. I have det required docking station with DVI.
If i try to boot my computer from the docking station nothing happends - it seems that it freezes up.
The only way i can get the monitor to work is:
1. boot the computer disconnected from the docking.
2. when the computer has booted i place it on the docking station. Then i works!!!

Do you know how to solve the problem.
Hope to hear from you.
This is a bit hard to accomplish. Remember that ThinkWiki is a site with international scope. What makes sense (in my opinion) is a page that has some notes and hints about what to care for, what are weak parts etc. . But it wouldn't make much sense to create a list of sites where to get them. Or maybe that's just what you meant. ;-) I'll look into creating some infrastructure for that on occasion.
== This is a great general resource for ANY Thinkpad user ==

The promoted Linux-centricity is a minus, IMO. Regardless of the density of Linux content currently extant, the Linux focus seems exclusionary and probably drives away a lot of thinkpad users with useful content to add.

----
IBM probably has the best support website in the industry (albeit somewhat difficult to navigate), therefore ANY ThinkPad user may find general information there. The good thing about ThinkWiki is that it caters to a specific need, namely the (often difficult) task of installing the linux operating system on ThinkPad notebooks.
==ThinkWiki editing policies==

===write with other users in your mind===
When you write an article, keep the following things in mind...
*Respect others. Try sticking to a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Npov neutral point of view]. Respect the work of other writers. Respect your (potential) readers.
*ThinkWiki is not only about the newest models. Try to write in a way that is open for older, newer and future models. This especially regards the structuring of the information you provide.
*ThinkWiki is not only about your Distro. Try to make clear if something you write is valid only for your specific linux distribution.
*Even though the article is written by you, it is a piece of information others might work on later. Try to avoid personal remarks in your articles.

===naming policies for new pages===
If you create a new page, please consider the following page naming policies. This is important to keep a persistent page naming scheme and hence to ensure that ThinkWiki still works well when it has grown more complex.

Page names (the links you create to point to the page) are used as the page Title. Considering these policies has the following advantages:
*the pages will have self-explaining titles
*in Category views like the Model view the links to the pages are expressively labeled and similar pages are sorted together
*the pages are more easily found in search engines like google

====general policies====
*It is allowed and in fact wanted that you use spaces within your page titles.
*The name you choose for the page should be as specific as its content will be. In other words...it should not be possible to write another page with more general content about the topic that your page title indicates.

====specific kinds of pages====
To sort similar pages together in the Model views, we start specific pages in defined ways.
The following table shows the naming schemes for several kinds of pages...
=== use our Link&Categorization Templates===
To ease editing and to provide a standardized way of linking to a category and categorizing the page at the same time in that category, we introduced the following Templates. So far there are two types of these:
*Model Templates. Just write the model number surrounded by winged brackets, like i.e. <nowiki>{{T40}}</nowiki>. This will be equivalent to <nowiki>[[:Category:T40|T40]] [[Category:T40]]</nowiki>. Hence the result will be a link like this: [[:Category:T40|T40]], but at the same time, the page will be categorized under that category.
*Distribution Templates. They work the same way as Model Templates, except that for them you need to specify the Distribution name (simplest, shortest variant of it). It will create a link to that distributions category page and also categorize the page you used the template on under that category.

APM setup on a type 2379 ThinkPad T40
2005-08-26T13:18:02Z

MJK:

There have been varying reports of success or lack thereof using [[tphdisk]]; my experience, as noted [http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/pipermail/linux-thinkpad/2004-March/016711.html in this] and [http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/pipermail/linux-thinkpad/2004-June/018329.html this] mail to the linux-thinkpad list, is that a pure-Linux fix on a T40 using [[tphdisk]] and a hibernate file or partition, was not possible.

My Thinkpad is a T40, type 2379, bought in the US.

My theory is that this is because [[tphdisk]] just creates a file in the right format, but does not twiddle a bit in the BIOS to indicate that APM hibernation is now possible. In earlier Thinkpads, this bit would have been set during the factory setup of the default Windows install with APM hibernation file; but in modern Thinkpads, Windows XP is installed with ACPI software-suspend instead.

Note: [http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&uid=psg1MIGR-52287&loc=en_US the changes list for IBM's BIOS] image used in the Thinkpad T40 gives an indication that this bug may be fixed with BIOS versions 3.08a or higher:

: Symptoms corrected by version 3.08a (1RETD4WW):
:
: (Fix) (Linux) Hibernation function does not work correctly under the partition environment created by lphdisk.

Given this, I'd suggest that if you're having trouble getting [[tphdisk]] to create a working hibernation file, a BIOS upgrade should be the first thing on your list.

===How I Got It Working===

If you're interested, I did manage to get it working after some trial and error. Here's how.

First off, the BIOS had to be at least 3.00c to support APM hibernation on my 2379 T40. Using the earlier, factory-installed BIOS, the SAVE2DSK.BIN file was supposedly created successfully by both [[tphdisk]] and IBM's utility, but hibernation failed.

In order to upgrade the BIOS, I needed to install a version of Windows earlier than Windows XP to run the BIOS upgrade application successfully. It wouldn't complete from IBM's default XP installation, or from any version of DOS (it's a Win32 application). I used Windows 98.

Once I did that, however, I could boot the IBM hibernation-file creation utility diskette. I had no floppy drive; however, during this process I discovered that one can burn a floppy disk image as an ISO image to a CD-ROM, as described on [[BIOS_Upgrade#Creating_a_Bootable_CD_from_a_Floppy_Image|this page]].

On booting from this CD-ROM, I could run the tool, and it created the SAVE2DSK.BIN file successfully. (Be sure to see [[How to make use of Power Management features#using a hibernation file on a dos partition|this page]] for details on sizing.)

Also worth noting that I had to use a FAT32 volume -- using a file on a FAT16 volume is no longer an option with today's large RAM installations, since neither [[tphdisk]] nor IBM's utility could create working 512MB SAVE2DSK.BIN files in a FAT16 filesystem due to size limits in that filesystem.
Power Management
2005-08-25T11:08:06Z

MJK:

The term Power Management is usually used as a referrer to the three basic functionalities enabling notebooks to save battery life when the user is not using it for some time: Screen Blanking ([[Standby mode]]), Suspend to RAM ([[Suspend mode]]) and Suspend to Disk ([[Hibernation mode]]). But Power Management in fact covers much more, especially it also covers a lot of useful functionalities to save power while the user is working with the notebook when it's on battery. Most importantly these are Dynamic Frequency Scaling, also known as [[SpeedStep]], the Power Mangement functions of the builtin harddrive and display related Power Mangement.

An ideally configured notebook would scale the processors (and also the graphics chips) frequency according to its use, spin down the harddrive if it's not needed anymore (and try to achieve such times a lot), shut down or suspend unused hardware components, maybe dim the LCD panel when on battery and of course put itself to sleep when the user doesn't do anything for a certain amount of time.

To make Power Management work, it highly relies on a message exchange (or event notification) system between the hardware (the notebook) and the software (the running OS). The classic solution for this is the APM (Advanced Power Management) system which leaves the big part of control to the BIOS. But over time this solution turned out to lack flexibility and so ACPI was developed, which is now widely preferred in modern notebooks. With ACPI the BIOS is basically only taking care of sending hardware events (like button triggers) to the OS or recieving software events and making the hardware react on that. All else (like the actual saving of the OS' state on suspends or processor speed control) is left to the operating system itself, enabling a great amount of flexibility and configurability.
The suspend mode is one of three power-saving modes for the Thinkpads. In this mode, the LCD screen (and the external monitor, if attached) is turned off and all tasks are stopped and stored in memory in order to save power. You can enter this mode by pressing {{Key|Fn}}+{{Key|F4}} or by configuring your computer to enter standby mode automatically after a chosen duration of inactivity. The computer can also go into suspend mode when closing the lid, unless it has been set up not to. This may be useful when you are working with an external monitor and you want to close the lid without going into suspend mode. When in suspend mode, the suspend indicator light be turned on. To resume operation, press {{Key|Fn}}.

Some Thinkpads also have the RediSafe suspend mode. This mode requires the presence of a hibernation file. To protect your work when you run out of battery power, this mode writes the status of the system to the hibernation file on the hard disk.
I currently have a Thinkpad {{380ED}} and a Thinkpad {{600E}}. The {{380ED}} runs [http://www.vectorlinux.com Vectorlinux] 4.0, but I'm planning to upgrade to the recent 5.0 and put my experiences on this wiki. The {{600E}} still runs Windows 98, but not for long...
